Penguin Book: Colour thumbnails and mock ups
Here are some colour thumbnails of different routes I could go down with this book cover. In the first light blue colour thumbnail I wanted to imitate a chalk outline of the Miss Bell. This is to represent what happens when a body is found. I also used a black outline of the Hazel who found her. I wanted to do this to show that these are two of the main characters we are introduced with at the start. However, in these illustrations I haven't included Daisy. I think that this perspective is interesting and I like how it stretches on to the back cover too. However, if I added Daisy on the back cover made Hazel smaller on the front I think it could be even more effective.
In these colour thumbnails I wanted to include the setting of the story- the girls school. In the first two thumbnails I created I only used the school in the illustrations. I think this looks effective. However, using the black over dark blue makes the text unreadable. I think the typography on the orange thumbnail looks effective I will experiment with this text going forward.
In the yellow version of this thumbnail I made Hazel smaller to make the white shadow bigger. This is to show the impact that the murder has throughout the story on the book. The typography used in both covers looks effective, however, I prefer how I included Robin Stevens on the white shadow. I think this adds dimension to the page. The red contrasted with the yellow is also very effective.
In the other thumbnails using the white and black silhouettes isn't as interesting. However I do like the fact that Miss Bell's side profile is on the spine of the book. I prefer the second thumbnail of this style. This is because the white fits better as Hazel's silhouette, I also still think I need to add Daisy on the cover going forward.

On the second two thumbnails I used similar colours and the same setting for the illustration. But I included the silhouettes of Hazel and Daisy, one on the front cover and one on the back. I this could look effective if I added more detail. I also like how I included the title and author over the top of Hazel's silhouette. I also did the same with Daisy's on the back but changed the colour of the blurb when it was on a different background.
Because I liked the idea of using the silhouettes on the front and back cover. I took inspiration from my research and drew the covers with just the silhouettes. I'm glad I attempted doing this as I can see that the cover isn't as interesting as the other thumbnails I drew.
I also experimented using a different background colour. I think this looks so much better. The house stands out a lot more and yours eyes focus on the windows and the suspects in the house too.

Because I wanted the girls school on the front cover, I mocked up the look of the house and the style I would want to draw it in. I like that the illustration is stylistic and different but I think I would use a different colour palette when drawing the actual front cover.
