Children's Book: Page Alterations

Image
I think this spot illustration looks so much better than the previous one. It looks brighter and exciting.  Here's a full page illustration I started doing for a pivotal point in the story. It's when Tan returns home and sees that there's nothing left. I don't like how this is turning out. The colour of the ground against Tan's fur is distracting and the tree trunks look odd.  Here's another illustration for my book. Again, it is so much better than the previous one I made. You can tell that as I have carried on with the story, I have realised how I like to draw Tan and his Mama. However, the background is a little too blue for the spot illustration so, I will lighten it up slighter. Although it's a small change, it has made a lot of difference and the illustrations look so much better as a group.  Here's a side by side comparison of what the original illustrations looked like, compared to the current illustrations. As you can see it has improved great...

Illustrated Trail: Sticker Sheet Development

Image
Sticker Sheet: Demi-Gods and Magical beings Sticker Sheet: Weapons and Accessories I think the new illustration designs for the stickers look so much better than the previous ones. I have decided I will just stick to two sheets of paper and leave it as that. I think just having gold illustrations makes the stickers feel previous and unique.

Illustrated Trail: More development

Small improvements (Brightened up the background) There's not a lot of changes made to this overall illustration. However, I just lightened up the background more As I wanted it to be more appealing to the child audience I'm targeting. Here's a small changed made to this illustration on the last sign. I changed the dance floor colours from a pastel look to colours that link more to the colour scheme of the trail.  I added in a caldron for this sign. This is mainly to hide my previous mistakes made in the cloaks and to add a new sticker design to my collection too.  I changed the lighting on this design. Instead of use a charcoal brush, I used an airbrush to make the lighting look less textured and I much prefer the outcome on this illustration than how it was before. Its simple and effective.

Negotiated Programme: Updated Portrait and Drop Cap

Image
Here's my new portrait. I made it cleaner and made a few changes. This is because my style has changed a lot over the year and I really like this outcome.  Here's my Drop cap. I wanted it to link to my children's book style because this is the way forward with my branding. I want it to be fun and show my ability to create texture on an illustration.

Childrens Book: changing colour scheme

Here is my finished character turn around. I decided to do this because I realised as I was drawing each illustration. There was a small change made in each. This has been incredibly helpful going forward and I intend on creating a back profile too.    When revisiting my first finished illustration this semester (the cover). I realised it was all green and hardly used a variation of colour. So added some subtle highlights and blue and yellow tones. This created more depth in the image and I intend to create these same changes with other illustrations.  Here's what the cover looks like with my new and improved version of Tan. I think this looks so much better and has a happy and brighter feel to it overall.  Here's some changes I made to the second page spread. I think this looks so much brighter. And more impactful. I could add a vignette over the image to show the feeling of the orangutan better. But that can be changed easily.  Here's another change I made to ...

Children's Book: Alterations

Image
Page 8 and 9: alterations I decided to make a few changes to Page 8 and 9. I wanted the trees in the background to be seen faintly behind the canopy to make it look more realistic. When I made the changes in black and white I realised it improved the appearance of the overall illustration and began to make the coloured illustration the same.   I really like how this coloured illustration has turned out. I think it shows the uncertainty of the story so far. I think the depth is represented well. However, I could add a few more colours to the overall image.  Page 10 and 11: alterations Here's some changes I made to the black and white version. I decided I would turn two full pages into two vignettes. This is because I don't want children reading to be confused at whats happening in the page. I want it to be clear there's only two orangutans.  Page 10 and 11 alterations Here's the colour outcome of these pages so far. I think you can tell the difference between the moth...

Illustrated Trail: More development

Changing the colour of the the foldout.   Because the map has now got a purple background, I thought it was only fitting for the question section of the foldout to be purple too. I do like how this ended it and I don't think it has made a huge difference to the final outcome except that each page links together.  Re-illustrating previous spot illustrations I also decided to start editing previous illustrations I had made in the first semester. In the original version of this spot illustration, Medusa's snakes blended into the background. This wasn't the effect I wanted. So, I decided to had a golden glow behind her, to represent fire and to create more depth between her and the soldiers. To improve this further I could make the soldiers lighter to blend into the background more.  For this spot illustration, nothing new was added apart from the columns, I made them look more realistic in the illustration and cracked/broke a few in the background to show the dang...

Penguin Books: making small changes

Image
Here are some final tweaks to the Murder Most Unladylike spread. I add shading to the spine of the book to make Robin Stevens more readable and I also moved the reviews across to make them more centred. As well as this I decided to justify disappeared. However, the spine does look a little off. It could be improved by using one colour instead of fading from black to white.  The clarity of my typography on the spine has greatly improved from what it was like before. However, I think the "Robin Stevens" needs to be bigger.  Here is the final book cover. I think it looks a lot better from the previous changes I made.

Penguin Book: Final Book Cover

Image
Final Front Cover  Here's the final cover for the Penguin Design Awards, Overall, I think it's really effective. I think the positioning of Hazel and Daisy is dynamic and having one of the teachers in the window starts to add suspicion of who the murderer could be. I think the text at the bottom is okay but I didn't have much time to change it in the short amount of time I had to make some tweaks.  Here's the final full cover. A few changes have been made to the text on the back. I moved it all up so that it would be in the sky and easier to read. And I positioned the text to justify. However, I didn't realise that I hadn't moved "disappeared" to the left. So, now it is the only word which it centred. It's a small mistake and if I get shortlisted, I will make sure it moves to the left.

Illustrated Trail: Redesigning the Map

Image
Because the blue versions of Medusa and Perseus blend in to too much with the green background. I decided to changed it to purple and keep the original black and gold version of Medusa and Perseus. I think that against the purple they really standout. Because they looked so effective I wanted the change the illustrations next to the signs to black and gold too.    At first, when changing the smaller illustrations, I decided to leave the flames blue and purple. However, I didn't think this went and I wanted to change it further.  I think that by making the flames yellow, the illustrations look so effective against the purple. And they stand out even more.
