Children's Book: Redesigning the first few pages

Image
Page 6 and 7 - In colour For the start of the story, most of the text is sequential so to explain the story through my illustrations I decided to draw the beginning with spot illustrations. This is to show the progression. I like how this illustrations turned out. However, when the Orangutans are next to each other the limbs can get lost.   Page 8 and 9 - Black and White  For this page I wanted to show the height of the tree y using a fun perspective. This perspective will be used again when Tan returns to his home. Throughout this illustration there will be a use of lettering to draw he audiences attention to the rumbling. It will look similar to this; "DRRRdddrrrrrrrggggbggrrrbggg"  Page 10 and 11- Black and White  For these pages I want the illustration on the left to be bright and colourful to show Mama Tan is getting to safety and I wanted the spread on the right page to be dark to show that Tan is struggling to keep up. The text is had to read at the momen...

Penguin Book; More development with the cover

Image
Because. it looked like Daisy was looking through the magnifying glass with one eye I decided to add in the glass the reflection of her eye so make it more realistic. Although this made a small difference, I knew I need to redraw her in a completely different position to make her look correct.  So, I made her hunch over and look at something on the ground. I decided the most effective and believable option would be footprints. I think this has made a huge difference to Daisy's character and makes the cover more dynamic with the different heights.  I also added in some of the suspects in the windows of the school. I think it adds more to the building and it intrigues the audience. I quickly added in the blurb of the cover to see what colours it could go in. I decided I wanted to use black and white from the start so that the words are more legible. I also like how the text is mainly in the sky.  Although my favourite cover is with the full house stretch over both pa...

Children's Book: Researching binding and printing costs

Image
Binding methods  For this project I wanted to see if I would be able to bind my own children's book. I thought this could make it more personal and precious. On the other hand, having the book professionally printed would allow me to send it off to clients, in hopes to create and design my book. Before I started to create my book I needed to do research into which method I should use.  Saddle Stitch Binding  best for smaller documents, cost effective.  Ensures the pages are intact.  Most suited for magazines.  PUR Binding paperback  uses paperboard or heavy cover stock to attach the pages to the spine with glue.  it makes for a strong, clean spine, that's durable enough to hold heavier stocks.  perfect for paperbacks, annual reports or premium projects. Single sewn binding Traditional method.  a single thread is stitched through the folded pages at the spine.  No adhesive or stapling.  Stitching can be either on the outsi...

Penguin Book Development

In response to my group tutorial. I knew I needed to reposition the title so that it wouldn't overlap onto the house and so that it didn't cover Hazel's top of her head. By doing this it makes the cover look more professional and like it has been thought out. I then went on to typing out the blurb on the back cover. To do this I needed to add it in to photoshop. However, during the process it must have changed the colour of the house in the background to a much lighter shade. It made the children on the front cover grainy as well. I am unsure how this happened and whether something in the settings could have caused this. So, I went back to procreate to design the cover more. I will hopefully be able to continue most of the process in this app just in case transferring it over to photoshop could lower the quality even more. To develop my book even more I decided I wanted to see what Daisy's hair would look like if it was a brighter yellow. Although it's brighter and ...

Children's Book: Draft of story

Page 6 and 7 Tan and Mama Tan live in a very big tree, in a very big jungle! They loved to play, it was their favourite thing to do.  That was until...  Page 8 and 9  The rumbling began. It would never end.  The rumbling would shake poor Tan in his big, tall tree.  Then one day his mother exclaimed 'We have to move far away from this place!" Page 10 and 11 Tan didn't want to go. But the rumbling got closer and louder.  It was time to leave.  "Fast!" Mama Tan shouted.  But Tan was tired and couldn't keep up.  Page 12 and 13 Tan was lost, he didn't know which way to go.  Down the river? Up the Hill?  There was only one place he knew where to go. Home.  Page 14 and 15  When Tan reached his tree, the rumbling had taken everything.  Nothing was left.   Tan was all alone and he had no where to call home.  But then... suddenly...  Page 16 and 17  Tan heard a huge "OUUUUUUCHHH!" It was Rhino....

Children's book: story development

To continue my development with this project I needed to shorten the length of the text in the children's book. So for each page I trialed and errored and few scenarios and different wordings.  Page 12 and 13  Page 14 and 15  Page 16 and 17 Page 18 and 19  Page 20 and 21 Page 22 nd 23 Page 24 and 25  Page 25 and 26 Page 27 and 28

Illustrated Trail: Map Design

Image
Here's the new version of the map for Trentham Gardens. I wanted it to be colourful rather than the pirates map I initially designed. This map equally uses my style along side the style of the original map as well. You will be able to see that on each number there is a different illustration that hints at what the sign is. Although I like the black and gold versions of Perseus and Medusa, I don't think they match the tone of the map.  So, I decided to experiment with different colours- the first being a royal blue. Although it standouts out when it's on it own, it doesn't stand out when its on the map. It looks hidden and muddied.  So, I decided to lighten it. It still blends in a lot with the background but it stands out more than it previously did.  I then went even lighter. I'm undecided whether I prefer this version or the previous version of the characters. I think I might need to lighten the whole of the map for it suit more with the characters.  Here's wh...

Penguin Book: Cover Development

Image
For the penguin book cover, I decided I wanted to add more colour into it. This is so it's more eye-catching for children to look at. So, I decided I would add in my interpretations of Hazel and Daisy. I think think the outcome is good and having the school in the background is an interesting concept. However, I am not sure what to include on the back cover. Also the front might need a road or path leading to the school.  This is the just the front cover to see what it looks like with the path in the front. I think it looks okay but the background still looks plain to me.  I decided to make a version of the cover with just the house. This was to see what it looked like on it's own and whether I should add people in the windows. When I originally drew it I thought the darkness of the house added to the moody feeling of the book. However, I think it should be lightened. When I lightened the house up. It made the whole cover look more appealing. I think using a light and b...
