Penguin Book Cover: More book cover mock ups

Image
I decided to do colour mock ups of each cover that I like and that think could make for an interesting cover. Although I like this one, I think it needs more detail or something more interesting added in to in to make it stand out more.  So, I decided to include the silhouettes of the two main girls, however, this kind of cover style could end up looking redundant and too similar to the original cover. I do think it's an improvement of the first cover idea though.  Because I wanted to create a different idea to the previous cover I decided to use one of my initial sketches of a chalk outline to create a book cover. So, I recreated the chalk outline to look more like Miss Bell and I positioned it on a full cover. I also created full body silhouettes of Hazel and Daisy. This looks very similar to the original cover and I don't think I should use them just on their own.  Here's the full body cover in a bigger size. Although the front cover is interesting. I do think the back...

Children's Book: Handwriting and Editing the text

Image
I created my own font for the children's book I'm writing. This is because I wanted the text to be clear but also playful, this was to fit with the theme of the book and to match the illustrations. This is my first attempt at creating a font so the outcome could be unsuccessful.  As well as the first font I created I wanted to try to make the font more playful with vines and jagged letters to see if it could look interesting. However, when I converted it in to the font, the vines I added on each letter didn't look as defined as I previously made them. For example;  The letters I had created weren't as fun and some look completely different to my original lettering for example 'e''o' 'z' and 'f'.  Because I wanted to make the word count in my story lower, I started rewriting each individual page to see how the words would fit. I also tried out a different font for the book in 2. Although the words were more clear I do like the idea of us...

Penguin Book: Colour thumbnails and mock ups

Image
Here are some colour thumbnails of different routes I could go down with this book cover. In the first light blue colour thumbnail I wanted to imitate a chalk outline of the Miss Bell. This is to represent what happens when a body is found. I also used a black outline of the Hazel who found her. I wanted to do this to show that these are two of the main characters we are introduced with at the start. However, in these illustrations I haven't included Daisy. I think that this perspective is interesting and I like how it stretches on to the back cover too. However, if I added Daisy on the back cover made Hazel smaller on the front I think it could be even more effective.   In the yellow version of this thumbnail I made Hazel smaller to make the white shadow bigger. This is to show the impact that the murder has throughout the story on the book. The typography used in both covers looks effective, however, I prefer how I included Robin Stevens on the white shadow. I think this add...

Penguin Project: Thumbnails of book cover design

Image
Halfway through reading the book, I wanted to start creating thumbnails for the potential book cover designs. As I have said previously, I wanted the reader to be able to understand that the book is set in the 1930's, this is why I decided to use so much art deco in the design process. Although it looks okay, I don't like the use of patterns, and it doesn't explain the story.  Out of the 9 thumbnails I created I decided to redraw and size up the two that seemed the most appealing to me. I liked the idea of the school being the whole cover in the first thumbnail, mainly because this is where the whole story takes place. I like how in each window there is a different person- the different people could represent how many suspects there are in the murder mystery.  I liked that in the second thumbnail on the front cover would be Hazel and the back would be Daisy. They are the silhouettes of themselves- which is similar to how the Sherlock Holmes books have been created. Thro...

Third project: Penguin- Initial response

Image
I decided out of the two ideas for the third project, that I will go ahead with the Penguin Student Design Awards. This is because as I began reading it, I started thinking of different ideas. Whereas the other brief, the "diversity in Children's book" article, would be more difficult to create new and interesting illustrations.    Here's my initial response of the title and the synopsis. The first sketches don't match with the plot and age group of the book. If I was to recreated this I would draw Hazel and/or Daisy standing in the gym and their shadow is the chalk outline. As I started reading the book, it became clear that this was set in the 1930's so I wanted the typography to show this and I started practicing different styles and fonts that are inspired by art deco.  When I reached descriptions of characters in the book I created a quick sketch of how I would represent their characteristics. The first two characters I drew were Hazel and Daisy, the two ...

Third Project Idea- Editorial Design

Image
Editorial Illustration surrounding diversity in media.  For this project idea I wanted to design a front cover of a magazine article surrounding the need for more diversity in children's books and media targeted to them. This is because I wrote an essay on this topic and I think this could be something that shows off my range of skills; I can design books covers/stories, an illustrated trail and can create thought-provoking editorial illustrations.  Research  illustrated by Tina Kugler This illustration aptly represents the "Lack of Diversity in Children's Books". It shows the children who aren't represented and white children who are overly represented. This infographic is the stye and theme that I'd like my illustration editorial piece to be like. It's playful but also it makes the audience question why there is a deficiency.  illustrated by David Huyck  This is a similar illustration depicting the lack of diversity. Both of these illustrators work look ...

Third Project Ideas- Penguin Student Design Awards

Image
First Idea  Penguin Children's Cover Award The Brief is to design the full cover and the series logo of Murder Most Unladylike. It's set in the 1930s. The story follows the protagonists "Hazel Wong" and "Daisy Wells" but mostly narrated by "Hazel". I am currently reading the book and it has an interesting storyline. Entering in the Penguin Student design awards could be incredibly beneficial for my future career in illustration.  Similar books and research Illustrated by Johnny Dombrowski Illustrated by Johnny Dombrowski Murder on the Orient Express by Agatha Christie This book is set in a similar period of time. The illustration on the cover is intriguing for the viewers. For a murder mystery book it is incredibly important for the reader to be gripped from the start, so if the reader is interested by the front cover because it shows the setting and the reader can gather the period from it then it will be effective. In the illustrations above Dom...
