Penguin Project: Thumbnails of book cover design

Halfway through reading the book, I wanted to start creating thumbnails for the potential book cover designs. As I have said previously, I wanted the reader to be able to understand that the book is set in the 1930's, this is why I decided to use so much art deco in the design process. Although it looks okay, I don't like the use of patterns, and it doesn't explain the story.

Out of the 9 thumbnails I created I decided to redraw and size up the two that seemed the most appealing to me. I liked the idea of the school being the whole cover in the first thumbnail, mainly because this is where the whole story takes place. I like how in each window there is a different person- the different people could represent how many suspects there are in the murder mystery.  I liked that in the second thumbnail on the front cover would be Hazel and the back would be Daisy. They are the silhouettes of themselves- which is similar to how the Sherlock Holmes books have been created. Throughout the book the children reference Sherlock and Watson, so I thought it could be clever to reference that in the cover.
Then I recreated those thumbnails digitally so I could use colour in the school thumbnail. I also included the silhouettes of Hazel and Daisy in this image because I thought it was effective in the previous illustration. As well as this I wanted to draw Hazel and Daisy without a silhouette to see what difference it made. Overall, I prefer the first two I created over the more detailed one. But I do like the typography used in the third.
